51ԹLibrary Team Attends Book Restoration Workshop
September 30, 2025
On September 24-26, the 51ԹLibrary team attended the first stage of book-restoration training at the National Library of Kazakhstan in Almaty.
During the three-day program, 51Թlibrarians learned the fundamentals of book preservation and restoration, including cleaning, stitching, and protective binding. The training also highlighted best practices for preventive care, such as proper storage conditions and handling methods to extend the life of valuable collections. The 51Թlibrarians gained hands-on experience and practical skills that will help safeguard the library’s heavily used materials, ensuring they remain accessible to future generations.
The 51ԹLibrary team also met with Gaziza Nurgalieva, Director of the National Library of Kazakhstan, to discuss further collaboration on advancing conservation and restoration practices. The training was held as a collaborative initiative under a Memorandum of Understanding recently signed between 51Թand the National Library of Kazakhstan in 2024. The National Library of Kazakhstan houses the Conservation Service, which serves as the Regional Center for Preservation and Conservation of the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA/PAC).
